i have have owned an iphone 2g for nearly a year now and i have a decent knowledge in its hardware and software. I have seen what other people out in the iPhone community are capable the following news article was enough to get me laughing my head off.
Airtel and Apple have worked closer together on the iPhone 3G than previously known. In an interview with Indiatimes, Bharti Airtel’s CIO and IT director Jai Menon claimed that the Airtel version of the iPhone 3G was hacker-proof. Apparently the Airtel-specific applications on the iPhone have been developed closely with Apple and “suitable levels of security” have been taken to ensure that all Airtel Live and Airtel Apps applications remain out of “bounds for hackers”, Mr. Menon told the website. These operator-specific applications were build over a year’s time and were “pretty much a stealth exercise that transpired by leveraging Airtel’s service delivery platform”.
Airtel claims that even if a hacker manages to get another provider’s SIM card to work with an Airtel iPhone 3G, they would still be locked out of Airtel-specific applications. We imagine a cheaper enterprise would be to hack an import iPhone 3G rather than an Indian piece. But this claim by Airtel might be enough incentive to get those hackers hacking away, just to prove Mr. Menon wrong. Source: Indiatimes
only 8 hours later I read the following article on engagenet mobile only to have my eyes rolling how ignorant is Airtel, it took some very smart people to have the iPhone jailbroken the very next day after it was released, now Airtel is stating that Airtel specific application will be hard nut to crack or even impossible, this could also be a very bad thing, how many of us have had a Nokia Symbian phone only to replace the provider specific app and have the phone unlocked. Even with the specific app i reckon that Palika Bazar will have the phone on sale with the Airtel specific app jailbroken in 3 days.

India’s Airtel — which is offering Apple’s iPhone 3G at a near-stratospheric price – has claimed that “even the most deadly hackers on the planet won’t be able to crack the codes that support the iPhone’s Airtel applications with rival company SIMs.” Just so you know, it appears that Airtel worked with Apple to develop “operator-specific iPhone applications,” which is an interesting tidbit in and of itself. But let’s focus on the task at hand here, and that’s proving that making ridiculous claims about impenetrability always comes back to bite ya.
